ALEX (SASHA) WERTH
presents
ON LOOP: BLACK SONIC POLITICS IN OAKLAND

PERFORMANCE + BOOK PARTY

Chicago has house. Detroit has techno. But Oakland slaps.

In On Loop: Black Sonic Politics in Oakland (University of California Press), local author Alex Werth (DJ Sasha) argues that social science and public debate overlook the ways that popular music and sound animate the politics of race and space. But Black dance music and sonic practices are key to decoding the everyday social movements that have made and remade Oakland into one of America's most iconic and contested cities.

In this dynamic event, Werth will introduce readers to the main themes of the book through a multimedia performance that mixes text, images, videos, and live soundscaping. It will be followed by a discussion and audience Q&A moderated by César Alvarez. Stay after to celebrate and connect over refreshments.

TOPOGRAPHIES IN DANCE AND VISUAL ART
Rock, Dirt, Breath: Topographies in Dance and Visual Art
is an extraordinary
weekend of performances, visual art, and community engagement featuring
artists across six decades—from their 20s through their 80s.

Friday and Saturday evening programs showcase five solo works by acclaimed
dance artists Sarah Konner, Maya LaLiberté, Paul Matteson, Andrea Olsen, and
Randee Paufve. The dances are presented alongside a concurrent exhibition of
sculpture, painting, photography, and a rock mandala, featuring artists Harriet
Brickman
, Philip Buller, Rosalyn Driscoll, Caryn McHose, and Stephen Texeira.

Movement Training for the Resistance

Emergent Improvisation is a potent laboratory for experiencing ourselves as powerful agents of change. This workshop offers practice in the skills we need to make work together that is both improvised and cohesive. Shared intention, spontaneity, focus, receptivity, and resilience are the fascia of many social justice movements, and serve as inspiration for movement scores designed to expand the range of choices we’re able to make in the moment. Each class balances solo investigations with whole-group awareness, activating the space so that transformational collective action can arise. Some previous movement experience is helpful, but all are welcome!

NORTHAMPTON PRINT & BOOK FAIR

SEPTEMBER 27, 11am - 5pm
THE WORKROOM

Over 30 artists, publishers, and designers from throughout western MA and across New England will fill The Workroom to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the popular Northampton Print & Book Fair! Visitors can purchase art directly from artists in a fun, approachable setting that combines the format of a flea market with an art show.

Established in 2015, the Northampton Print & Book Fair was created to promote contemporary artist publications, prints, and multiples; celebrating local talent while bringing regional artists and publishers to our community in western Massachusetts for an annual event that is free and open to the public. NPBF builds on the legacy of self-publishing, offering artists space to experiment, express radical ideas, and foster communities outside established circuits. Rooted in values of mutual aid, community care, and collaboration, the fair is a space where ideas and techniques are shared openly, planting seeds for future artworks, partnerships, and connections.
