QUADRALECTIC:

A Group Solo Show
September 6- 28

Split Level Gallery

Opening reception • September 13; 5-8pm • Part of Arts Night Out

“Quadralectic: A Solo Group Show,” is a unique exhibition curated by Malinda Labriola featuring the work of four artistic personas, each representing a different facet of Malinda’s artistic practice.
Meet the Artists:
  • Siggie Zampa, the cartoonist, shares humor through playful cartoons created using just two vibrant colors.
  • R.L. Stilzkin, the illustrator, opens up detailed worlds with intricate line drawings of whimsical characters that spark the imagination.
  • GASEO, the abstractionist, captures the essence of motion and energy by using the movement of cars to create dynamic line drawings, often transformed with watercolor
  • Mal Labriola, the printmaker, merges nature and art by crafting unique prints and compositions with ink pads and local flora.
“Quadralectic” celebrates the idea that creativity is defined but not limited by the media we use, and that art can flourish when made with discernment rather than judgment. As the title would suggest, “Quadralectic” places bodies of work in dialog to create a synergistic blend of artistic voices, underscoring that our diverse expressions can work together, enrich the whole, and encourage the exploration of what art can be. Each piece in this show invites people of all ages to explore their creativity and find artistic personalities of their own that might be waiting to emerge. We hope to see you there!

MALINDA (MAL) LABRIOLA; curator (they/them) is an Easthampton-based artist whose curation of artforms began in childhood at the Garrison Art Center (GAC) on the banks of the Hudson River in Garrison, NY. An illustrator, painter, printmaker, pyrographer, writer, and musician, Mal enjoys exploring as many artistic mediums as delight them, preferably while learning from others. “Quadralectic” is Mal’s first “solo” show.

SHADOW AND LIGHT:

An Expression of the Cancer Experience
August 3- 28

Split Level Gallery

Many cancer patients express their experiences with cancer in artwork and writing that’s rarely seen. Curator and artist Malaika Ross wants to change that by creating this exhibition where this work can be seen and honored for the incredible artwork and writing that it is.

MALAIKA ROSS is a Caribbean American visual artist in Western Massachusetts. In April 2023, she became the one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the United States. She’s currently working on The Visibility Project, a series of paintings that center black female breast cancer survivors whose chests were radically transformed after surgical treatment.

A CELEBRATION OF BRILLIANTS!

Presented by ETTA Arts and The Rainbow Players
June 29, 7pm

The Workroom

Join us as we begin our 25th year of celebrations. You will enter an Inclusive Art Exposition of area artists. Then, you will make your way to the Carnival of Misfits, a taste of the many life experiences when you live with a label of disability. Walk around our set and explore the artifacts of life as a labeled person. Then, take your seats and the Master of Ceremonies will welcome you to our 3 Ring Circus- Past, Present and Future works!

How is the mindset laid out as the labels are diagnosed? What is the fallout? What choices are there? Certainly to change the lens from within… this is the journey to ‘brilliance’, to shifting the viewpoints: inside and out. Where did these viewpoints begin? And how can we shift them? Join us to see. You will get an inside view of the process of improvisation to bring a story to stage! You’ll get to talk to the actors in a special discussion part of the show…. So, come, enjoy!

ARTISTS RECEPTION: MARCH 8, 5- 8pm (part of Arts Night Out)

BIOMORPH is an exhibition of works by Madge Evers, Laurie Miles, and Rachel Thern. Using different media, their work is unified by a shared curiosity fueling an expression of architectural forms and patterns in nature.

Evers creates atmospheric cyanotypes from foraged plant material. Using photography, Miles reveals  the transparent networks within vegetables. Thern draws from her imagination to generate rhythmic patterns in charcoal. Real or imagined, BIOMORPH offers the audience unique perspectives and reverence for the natural world.

Opening reception FEBRUARY 9, 5- 8pm (Arts Night Out)

The Queer Trans Art Group at Resilient Community Arts is presenting a collection of their work at the Split Level Gallery at 33 Hawley St. After biweekly collective meetings, the group has produced a colorful and meaningful body of work ranging from drawing, fiber arts, painting, sculpture, collage and more. The Queer Trans Art group, fondly known as “QTAG,” is made up of artists local to the valley who have shared identities and experiences living as Queer and Trans people in our world. By valuing mutual support and vulnerability, the group has cultivated a community that’s collectively honored as a space for emotional processing and profound creative expression.

POETRY READING • JANUARY 25, 7pm

An artist residency allows one to step away from the responsibilities of daily life and dive deeply into creative work. This might take place in a remote setting, where an artist can concentrate on a project without distraction. Or, it might occur in an exotic location that stimulates new work.

The seven printmakers in this exhibition invite you to share  explorations and discoveries resulting from their experiences as resident artists. While each has created work that explores “a sense of place” as a connecting theme, this exhibit offers up a range of approaches and techniques.

MAKING GROUND: LIVE!

A.P.E.’s Re-Opening of The Workroom
January 19- 20, 7pm

The Workroom

This January 2024, A.P.E. will host a special two-day live performance event to celebrate the reopening of the Workroom at 33 Hawley after its extensive renovations. The event will echo the pre-renovation participatory ceremonies of MAKING GROUND, a public art + drawing project, in which the community covered the 3800 sq-foot floor of the Workroom with chalked drawings in an invitation to consider creative engagements with land, community, space, imagination, and stewardship.

For this January event, 16 artists and artist groups—dancers, musicians, performance + theater artists, writers, and poets—have been invited to create a performance offering of 6 minutes or less. Confirmed artists include: Frieda Kipar Bay and Jesse Olsen Bay, Javiera Benavente, Mary Beth Brooker, Roy Faudree, Julia Handschuh and Anna Hendricks, Hatchery Youth Performance Company, LOCULUS Collective (Olana Flynn and Madison Palffy), Trenda Loftin, Emrys Maxner, Rowyn Maxner, Jen Polins, Gabrielle Revlock, Ro Sigle, Jules Skloot, Batya Sobel, and Anne Woodhull.

Join us January 19 + 20: with a different bill each night!
Stay tuned for more details.

RETURNING TO THE WELL:

Authentic Movement as a Restorative Practice for Aging Bodies
January 21, 1- 4pm

The Workroom

Faciliated by Mary Ramsay

As we age, our experience in our bodies can be defined by our physical limitations, aches, and pains and by society’s attitudes about aging. How can we tap the resources we have embodied through our years of living – imagination, curiosity, creativity, wisdom (to name a few) – to change our experience of aging and our relationship to our aging bodies?
