WHAT DOES THIS BODY MAKE:

a Research and Dance Composition Workshop with Shannon Stewart

Presented by Atland

May 18, 3:30- 6pm

The Workroom

In this workshop, we will use our individual and group body to make and unmake ourselves. Working with disorientation, quick shifts of attention, endurance and group dynamics, we will move away from language and towards embodied comprehension. We will push to the edges but also question “edge” as a boundary or distinction between ourselves, others and the space we occupy. Open to all levels.

Jurkiewicz, a painter from New Britain, CT, creates monumental works that explore the fluidity and complexity of nature. Using acrylic paint on canvas, her abstract yet evocative compositions offer a visual journey into lush, dreamlike environments that engage with the themes of growth and transformation. Her paintings are designed to create a sense of total immersion, bringing viewers closer to nature’s raw, unfiltered beauty.

Birds and Pollinators Nourishing the Ecosystem

IF THESE FEET COULD FLY

Works by Natasha Wein
February 6- March 2

Split Level Gallery

Opening reception: February 14, 5-8pm

If These Feet Could Fly
is a collection of paintings made with her feet exploring answers to this question: What happens when the body deteriorates in new and unexpected ways before the heart is ready? “My body is decomposing quicker than I can write down the recipe to reverse. God, please don’t ever let me stop falling in love: with people, places, the mundane and ordinary, but even more so with what’s left of my broken body and shattered heart and all the ways that these pieces can still be reorganized into a mosaic of a life well lived. With paint on my feet, I document it permanently.”

NATASHA WEIN (she/her) is a self-taught physically disabled abstract painter, poet, and small business owner living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and a traumatic brain injury. She started painting with her feet when a neck injury left her temporarily unable to use her hands. By creating in a way that is safer for her body, Natasha abstracts the pain and grief of living with serious chronic health conditions and discovers new storylines free from the constraints of injury and illness.

REMEMBER TO REMEMBER

January 8- February 1

Split Level Gallery

Remember to Remember brings together the works of Emine Cichowski, Muriel “Monik” Johnson, and many artists from The Care Center. Spanning multiple mediums, the exhibition offers a dynamic lens into dream, memory, and daring expression.

Emine’s ceramic works are eruptions of the visceral: from childhood memories of Turkey and her powerful relationship with her grandmother, to cries against the pain wrought on human beings by various forms of unfettered power. Says Mollye Maxner, co-director of A.P.E.: “The works that emerge from Emine’s artistic practice are like poems–tangible, insistent, three-dimentional songs–full of rhythm, heart, and above all, yearning.”

Monik’s artwork sets real, ethically-sourced butterfly wings against felt backgrounds to depict characters from her waking life and her dream life, including many portraits of ancestors. In Monik’s words: “Each butterfly wing is a natural masterpiece unto itself. Working with butterfly wings feels like a sacred act, a ritual that grounds me in the wonder and exquisite beauty of nature. My artistic process is a lesson in patience and the passage of time, as I must wait for the butterfly to complete its natural life cycle before gathering enough wings to create. Within every collage, lives a piece of an ancestor's story…”

The artwork from The Care Center emerges from classes taught by visual artist and curator, Léa Donnan. From Léa: “The Care Center students use art to explore their inner worlds through a kaleidoscope of media. They make art because their ideas are important, and because there is great power in expressing and representing who we are.”

She has performed across the globe as a professional storyteller. EMINE CICHOWSKI “Creativity is my life jacket, I float with it!" Emine grew up in the small town of Gemlik, Turkey. She came to USA in 1968 to attend university at University of Connecticut. She and her husband ran an apothecary in Mansfield, CT for many years. When they sold it, Emine dove into clay like a hungry soul. "Since than I found my calling and knew I would spend the rest of my life pursuing what I love: clay/play!”
