SOUNDSCORES FOR LIVING SCENERY
Soundscores for Living Scenery is a series of recorded soundworks created by artist Sara Smith for specific outdoor locations. In the most recent version, Soundscores for sites in Northampton were released from July-December 2023. A project zine and listening tour of these sites will be available later in 2024.
The Soundscores incorporate original music, field recordings, and other sounds, and are designed for immersive listening to support and augment listeners’ experiences of specific environments, as soundtracks and soundscores enhance the atmosphere of a film or theatrical performance. Smith, an artist rooted in choreography and performance, is interested in how embodied knowledge and memory are informed by dynamic and intentional auditory, visual, tactile, and other sensory-motor experience.

Sara’s projects have been supported by funding from the LEF Foundation, Maine Arts Commission, and New England Foundation for the Arts, a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in choreography (2016), and residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, Hewnoaks, and the American Antiquarian Society. Sara works as the Arts & Humanities Librarian at Amherst College.
